Hy-Test – Dishing Out The Good Times
Bursting from the coal rich escarpment overlooking the coastal city of Wollongong, Hytest were born when three young rock n roll fans raised on a diet of The Ramones, Black Flag and Kyuss started to make some noise in an already famed rehearsal space. Hytest guitarist/vocalist Mick Curley had watched his older brothers in their band Tumbleweed rise from the small rehearsal room in his family’s back yard to become one of Australia’s favourite rock bands. Alongside his mate Luke Armstrong (bass/vocals), he was ready to begin making some sounds of his own. Originally teaming up with Adam Rogan, the band would later settle on Neil Matthews (drums) to round out the powerful trio.
Starting with a raw demo that showed plenty of potential, the band quickly established themselves in their hometown, supporting basically every rock band that toured through. After spreading their wings to plays shows across Australia’s east coast gaining fans in bands such as Regurgitator, The Mess Hall, Cog, Violent Soho and even Queens Of The Stone Age, Hytest hit the studio to record their debut self titled ep.
The release quickly propelled the band to a growing fan base when the tracks ‘The Party Song’ and ‘Dirty Old Man’ were both added to rotation on national radio network Triple J in Australia while strong reviews for both their ep and live performances flowed in. They continued their relentless tour schedule, while writing new material for what would be their second release ‘The Little Band That Could’.
The lead track ‘The Little Song That Could’ was also added to Triple J and they recorded a live version of the track for its television venture JTV. Further touring and high profile supports followed while they also continued writing songs for their debut album release.
In October 2009, Hytest debuted a number of their new songs when they supported Tumbleweed at their re-union show in Wollongong, where they were also joined on stage for the closing track by long time fan Nick Oliveri (Queens Of The Stone Age). On a high after playing that show to a sold out room, they hit the studios to begin work on the new album.
The debut album ‘Dishing Out The Good Times’ picks up where the earlier releases left off, but adds a maturity in both their song writing and performance that only comes with years of playing together. The future looks bright for Hytest with an international release scheduled for the album; they will head to Europe for the first time for a tour beginning in June before returning for a full Australian tour in August.
