ARIA nominated singer-songwriter Dan Brodie will be releasing his fourth album My Friend the Murderer on July 18, 2011. Brodie’s early work blurred the genres between alternative and country music. His debut album, Big Black Guitar (1999) was released under the moniker, Dan Brodie and the Broken Arrows featuring his brother Chris Brodie on lap steel guitar and future Alpha Male, Dan Kelly, on bass. Signed to EMI, Brodie recorded the critically acclaimed follow up, Empty Arms, Broken Hearts (2002)
Containing eleven tracks, My Friend the Murderer was recorded live at Headgap Studios in Preston, Melbourne during 2010 by engineer Brent ‘Sloth’ Punshon (Adalita/The Nation Blue) with Brodie’s new band, Dan Brodie & the Grieving Widows featuring Dave Nicholls (Ian Rilen/Spencer P.Jones) on drums, Chris Brodie (Broken Arrows) on the guitar and Katie Harris on the bass. Played with a sparseness of instrumentation, Brodie has created a very Australian sounding record in it’s preference toward space and isolation, lyrically channeling the troubled obsessions of people whose love has turned into a crippling hate, with disastrous consequences for all and My Friend the Murderer is the sound of when it all comes apart at the seams.
Released on cd and digital format through Brodie’s own label, Grieving Widow Muzak, it can be downloaded from www.thegrievingwidows.com, via Band camp, ITunes and will also be available to purchase at shows, with a vinyl release expected later in the year.
